Get Lost: Why losing your way might be the best leadership move you make

April 23, 2026

“Get Lost!"

What if I told you to get lost?

You might first say “Lex, what year were you born again?”

Or you might say…“Get lost? What did I do? Why?"

Well, this is what I mean.

I was recently taking a walk with my little guy, choosing a route through the neighborhood I typically don’t take. For a minute, I was unsure. Off track. Out of rhythm. Lost.

And then something powerful happened. I asked my son “which way do we go?” My toddler then became a guide. He listened. He observed. He spoke with confidence.

“Dada, this way.”

In that moment, I realized something...Getting lost forces you to pay attention in a way comfort never will. It sharpens your awareness. It builds trust. It reveals who, and what, you’re willing to rely on. Sometimes, we spend so much time trying to avoid being lost that we miss what it can teach us.

Let me tell you…Being lost isn’t always about direction Sometimes, it’s about discovery. Discovery of new paths. New perspectives. New leaders; even ones with the smallest voices.

So what are you asking yourself right now?

Is it…“How do I avoid getting lost?”

Or…What might I find if I allow myself to be?
